Our Aero Club. Norfolk Gliding Club is a long established gliding club operating from a World War II airfield at Tibenham, South Norfolk UK.
Tibenham was used as a Royal Flying Corps landing ground during the First World War.
Use by the USAAF. The airfield was built up during 1941-42 as a standard heavy bomber airfield with the B-24 Liberator and Mustang P51 flying from this airfield. It had an enclosed perimeter track containing 36 frying-pan type hardstands and fourteen loops. Accommodations were constructed for about 2,900 personnel. Tibenham was assigned USAAF designation Station 124.
Our 2011 pin up calendar evokes memories of the war time bombers and fighters based at this airfield.
History of the "Pin up girls" on Allied aircraft.
During the Second World War allied soldiers, sailors and pilots took images of these naughty, nice and glamorous pin up girls to remind them of home and to give them a little break from the war.
Women such as Dorothy Lamour, Betty Grable, Jean Harlow and Greta Garbo have appeared on the Mustangs, Spitfires and bombers of yesterday as wartime "nose art"
Army Air Corps pilots developed "nose art" that was beautifully painted on the outside of their fighter, bomber or cargo airplanes.
In 1947, the Army Air Corps officially became the United States Air Force. Nose art, especially that of vintage pin-up girls, continued to grace the outside cockpits of the best and fastest aircraft in the world.
With glamorous pin-up girls such as Betty Grable posing provocatively in a one-piece bathing suit.
Pin-up art reached its heyday during World War II, during this time, every female star in Hollywood had aspirations of becoming a popular glamour pin-up, this was part of their formula to successful movie careers.
